Medical Transcription

Feedback from employers in medical transcription and report typing indicates that speed is not the major factor in determining employability in this field; rather the key is accuracy. Speed is certainly desirable; many bureaus employ on the basis of fee per word and so, obviously, the faster that an individual types the more they can earn. However if the work is not accurate it will be rejected, no matter how quickly it is prepared.

We believe that a commencing typist, particularly those planning to work from home, should be able to begin at their own pace; and that with practice each will eventually achieve his or her optimum output.

The medical transcription skills set we currently offer requires a proven competency of 70 words per minute, a seemingly difficult or impossible task for some.  How bitterly disappointing it would be for a student to invest their money and best effort in the medical transcription skills set, being competent in every skill, and yet fail to qualify; simply because they cannot achieve a typing speed of 70wpm.

Please note – we are not trying to devalue the transcription skills set. It is a highly sort after and valuable qualification, but the fact remains that it is unachievable for some, not because of lack of skill and accuracy, rather because of lack of speed.

Doubt about typing speed has prevented many from enrolling in the skills set and until this point that has meant they have nowhere to go in seeking training in this field. With this in mind we have constructed a basic course that we believe will give commencing students the skills they need to achieve employability; with the focus on accuracy rather than speed.

The new course called Medical Audio Typing is comprised of the following accredited units:

  • BSBMED301 Interpret and Apply Medical Terminology
  • BSBADM303 Produce Text from Audio Transcription

Enrolment is with Camden Haven Community College Inc., as the Registered Training Organisation (RTO 90018). For each unit successfully completed participants will receive a statement of attainment.

Course materials include hardcopies of our excellent training manuals LGTC805 Medical Terminology Workbook and LGTC810 Medical Typing. Audio files to assist with medical terminology and medical typing competency are provided online.

Training can be undertaken at the student’s own pace as the course is conducted as distance education, fully supported by phone and email contact with the trainer. There are no exams, competency is achieved by successfully completing assignments for each unit.

Computer access is essential.

Course duration: 18 weeks
